More
than 50 community stakeholders meet
with GSU Officials at Loyola Medical
Center to Discuss West Cook Campus
State
Representative Karen Yarbrough,
recognizing a gap in higher
education for her constituents,
hosted a meeting with Governor
State University (GSU) officials
and community stakeholders on
Tuesday at Loyola Medical Center
in Maywood. Among the items
discussed was a desire for GSU to
open an outreach center in Proviso
Township.
“There
is no public university in my
district that can affordably serve
the higher educational needs of my
constituents,” Rep. Yarbrough
declared. “I am pleased that
Governor State is taking a serious
look at our educational challenges
and discussing whether they can play
a role in fulfilling these
challenges,” she stated.
Among
the Governor State representatives
at Tuesday’s meeting were Provost
Paul Keys, Dean John Stoll,
and Veronica Williams,
director of the school of extended
learning. Eight other GSU
administrators attended.
Discussion focused around the
educational needs of the district,
the collaborative possibilities that
having GSU in Proviso would bring,
and how a college campus could be a
springboard for economic growth in
the community. Also discussed were
the specific degree programs that
can be targeted to either assist
this growth or stimulate other
areas.
State Senator Don Harmon and
State Representative LaShawn Ford
attended. Local governments were
represented by Mayors Henry
Vicenik of Broadview and
Henderson Yarbrough of Maywood,

Regional Superintendent-elect Dr.
Charles Flowers and Bernard
Clay, Introspect Services
