Discussion to focus on ways to help
families in West Suburban Cook
County
BROADVIEW – State Reps. Karen
Yarbrough (D-Maywood) and Elizabeth
Hernandez (D-Cicero), in conjunction
with the Heartland Alliance for
Human Needs & Human Rights, will
co-host a public forum titled
“Moving from Poverty to Opportunity”
on Tuesday, Nov. 13 from
6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 200 S. 5th
Ave. in Maywood. They will be
joined by over 20 Chicago-area
participants in the From Poverty
to Opportunity Campaign.
“Poverty is often behind many of the
problems that face our communities,
like crime and education,” Yarbrough
said. “It is important that those
concerned with how our state and
country deal with poverty gather at
public hearings like this one and
share strategies with each other and
the public at large.”
Yarbrough and Hernandez will be
joined by Doug Schenkelberg from the
Mid-America Institute on Poverty at
Heartland Alliance, who will provide
an overview of poverty in Illinois
and speak about the issue from a
human rights perspective.
Participants will learn about work
being done by organizations and
advocates to increase access to
jobs, housing, transportation,
health care, and education. The
hearing, one of over 25 that are
taking place around Illinois in
2007, will focus on how local
residents can take action to help
eliminate poverty in West Suburban
Cook County and across Illinois.
“Ending poverty in our communities
is a challenge, but it is something
that community-minded individuals
should not lose sight of,” Yarbrough
said. “I am glad that Maywood has
been chosen to host one of these
important hearings and I urge the
community to attend and show how
serious we all are about raising the
quality of life in our
neighborhoods.”
