The many experiences I have had in life -  the victories and the setbacks - have all contributed to my values, passions and sense of social responsibility.  I am glad to share my background with you so you can better understand my motivation in seeking public office and in serving as your representative.

"I value the opportunity to serve and to apply the many lessons I've learned as a woman, a wife and mother, and as a grandmother."

 - K. Yarbrough

My husband, Henderson Yarbrough, Sr., Mayor of the Village of Maywood, and I enjoy spending time with our children and seven grandchildren.  We are are committed to improving conditions in our state and in our community through public service.

Meet Zoe, my youngest grandchild.  I am thrilled to serve as state representative and to be able to pass laws that will help make Illinois a better place for her to grow up in and to receive a quality education.

My Background

I understand the importance of government to the citizens of the 7th District.  My understanding comes not only as a politician, but as a woman, wife, mother, grandmother of seven beautiful grandchildren, and as a businessperson.

I am a third generation entrepreneur.  My family has been involved with the real estate and insurance industries for several decades, providing real estate appraisal, sales and management services. For over 30 years I have been the founder and CEO of Hathaway Insurance Agency, an independent agency serving the Chicago metropolitan area. I earned a B.A. in business administration from Chicago State University and an M.A. in inner city studies from Northeastern Illinois University. During my graduate studies, I had the opportunity to go to Brazil where I studied strategies to employ community development in an emerging nation.  That experience gave me a profound appreciation for the challenges faced by disadvantaged communities in our own country.  My Brazilian experience gave me an abiding desire to develop strategies to address social challenges here in America and to empower people to help themselves.

Although I entered public service in 2001, I have remained involved in my communities at the grass-root level. For eight years  I  served as president of the Maywood Chamber of Commerce. During my tenure as the first female president of the Maywood Chamber of Commerce, I established the Gold Card Program, which provided opportunities for businesses and education to work together to provide scholarships for deserving students.

I have also served as a board member of the United Way of Suburban Chicago and the Oak Park YMCA.

As a resident of Maywood, I am involved in several initiatives to improve the quality of life for residents of the community. I love the arts and founded Maywood's live theater.  I am also a board member of the Way Back Inn, a member of the Maywood Youth Mentoring program, and a supporter of scholarship programs.

I am blessed to be able to combine my experiences, vision, and leadership abilities in my current position as state representative.  Because of my values, which my family held shape, responsiveness and accountability are hallmarks of my political career.
